    Global Innovation Index 2018: China Cracks Top 20

    China broke into the world's top 20 most-innovative economies as Switzerland retained its number-one spot in the Global Innovation Index (GII) ranking published annually by Cornell University, INSEAD and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).     First Release of Statistics for Patents, Trademarks and Geographical Indications from the State Intellectual Property Office

    On July 10, 2018, the State Intellectual Property Office (hereinafter referred to as the SIPO) held a regular press conference for the 3rd quarter of 2018 in Beijing. It is understood that this is the third press conference held by the SIPO this year, and that it is also the first time that the SIPO releases statistics for patents, trademarks and geographical indications to the public since it has been reconstructed. The journalists learned from the press conference that in the first half of 2018, China’s major intellectual property indicators achieved rapid growth and showed a good development momentum, in which the number of patent applications for invention and the number of granted patents in China rose to 751,000 and 217,000 respectively, and the number of registration of trademark applications was 3.586 million as well as 10 new applications for products protected by geographical indications were accepted.

    China Reforms its IP Administrative System with the Creation of a New Super Administration

    As part of larger institutional reorganization schemes, the Chinese government has recently issued a draft statute for the reform of the State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO). SIPO, until now an agency subordinated to the executive branch (i.e. the State Council), will be organized under a newly created super agency in charge of IP and product quality and safety. Among the goals of the reform are administrative simplification and increased efficiency in handling IP related matters, as well as the improved protection of the intellectual property rights of foreign entities and individuals in China.

    NCAC released the Report of China on Development of Online Copyright Industry (2018)

    On April 23, the Research Base of Online Copyright Industry under National Copyright Administration of China (NCAC) released the Report of China on Development of Online Copyright Industry (2018). According to the Report, China’s market of online copyright industry reached 636.5 billion yuan in 2017, an increase of 27.2% as compared to that in 2016. Among others, the user payment in the online copyright industry was up to 318.4 billion yuan, taking up more than 50% of the total.
